Aviyah’s Artistic Strength
CHEO became a staple in 11-year-old Aviyah’s life when her polycystic kidney disease turned into a cancer diagnosis. A surgery to remove one kidney was performed, and one year later, the other. Since then, Aviyah requires frequent dialysis and must keep a close watch on her diet. Even with these challenges, she maintains her playful and artistic spirit. Aviyah enjoys music therapy, colouring and dancing. With the help of her family and staff at CHEO, she keeps busy while waiting for a kidney transplant.
Parker’s Unstoppable Drive
Parker is a ten-year-old multi-sport athlete and motivated cancer warrior. After a painless lump sent him to CHEO in August 2022, it was discovered through scans and a biopsy that he suffered from Ewing Sarcoma. What followed was a strict chemotherapy regimen and an elaborate surgery that involved removing parts of his leg and knee and rotating the remaining part of his lower leg to recreate normal leg function. The operation was a success, and now Parker is back to being his active self. Now only a few months away from his CHEO bell ringing, Parker is looking to the future.
Lu’s Journey to Hope
Thirteen-year-old Lu was always an anxious child, but in 2022, things got worse. The stress of moving to Canada, dealing with bullies at school and the death of their beloved cat Skyler was too much to handle. This led to a mental health diagnosis. Referred to a professional through 1Call1Click, Lu has been building up a repertoire of coping strategies. While they still struggle at times, Lu is now in a much better place. A voracious reader and dedicated ringette player, they are hopeful for the future.
